Skegness Pier

Skegness

Skegness, home to the original Butlins built in 1936, is a seaside town located on the east coast of Lincolnshire. The town has a permanent population of over 16,000, however this obviously increases during the holiday season when many visitors flock to the town.

Until 1875, when the railway arrived, Skegness was a fishing village with small port. In 1881 Skegness had a 1843 foot (562 metre) long pier opened, at the time it was the fourth longest in England. From 1882 until 1910 steamboat trips ran from the pier to Hunstanton, in Norfolk. Sadly in 1919 the pier was damaged by a drifting ship and was not repaired fully for twenty years due to the costs involved.
